Today's technology have propelled the advancement of computation which used to be so complicated say 20 years back. High specification computers make it easier for engineers to perform complex analysis like Finite Element Modeling.
I saw this video presenting check of steel connection using Finite element software. Luckily, for engineer used in STAAD, you can also do the same checking if you understand the theory behind the finite element and of course the in and out of the software.
I checked this sample video where an isolated footing was analyzed using manual calculation and clearly matches result with Finite element modeling. Note however to us engineers of the familiar G.I.G.O..Garbarge in garbage out..We should be checking our parameters on the model first prior to accepting the result of the software.
